US wants to strengthen partnership with Sao Tome and Principe on maritime security
The United States today congratulated São Tomé and Príncipe on the anniversary of its independence, applauding the country’s commitment to democracy and expressing a desire to strengthen the bilateral partnership in areas such as maritime security.
“On behalf of the United States, I send my best wishes and congratulations to the people of São Tomé and Príncipe on the 47th anniversary of its independence,” reads a note from US diplomatic chief Antony Blinken, who wishes the country “continued success and prosperity.”
The secretary of state applauds “São Tomé and Príncipe’s commitment to democracy and good governance” and says the United States looks forward to strengthening its partnership with the Portuguese-speaking country “on shared priorities, such as maritime security.”
The independence of the archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe was declared on July 12, 1975, after centuries of Portuguese colonization.
