Russia opens criminal case and launches mega-operation against Jehovah’s Witnesses

Jehovah’s Witnesses have been officially considered an extremist group since 2017 in Russia.

Russia has opened a criminal case against the country’s Jehovah’s Witnesses, accused of extremist activities.

This Tuesday, the Investigative Committee, responsible for investigating serious crimes, announced that a mega-operation against the religious movement was launched, with searches in Moscow and more than 20 regions.

At stake is the practice of “conspiracy meetings” in apartments, during which believers “study religious literature and propaganda information about the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses” and recruit new members to the organization, write the Russian authorities in a statement quoted by AFP .
