Cabo Delgado: Creation of joint force between Nyusi and Total Government generates mistrust

Who pays for what? Doubts and misunderstandings arise

The memorandum signed between the Mozambican government led by Filipe Nyusi and the French company Total, regarding the creation of a joint force to protect the natural gas project in Cabo Delgado, is raising some doubts within Mozambican civil society.

The document establishes the terms of intervention of the “Joint Task Force”, that is, the creation of a military contingent, in the Afungi area and in the wider area of operation of the liquefied natural gas project, according to a statement issued this week, in the capital Maputo, but does not reveal the bill that the Mozambican state will have to pay for this understanding, writes the portal Voa Português.

The Mozambique LNG project will provide logistical support to that force, however many of the details of the agreement are not known, but many believe that a joint SADC force, of which Mozambique is a part, even to safeguard national interests, would be the way forward.
