Biden is formally nominated as a Democratic candidate who will face Trump

U.S. Democrats on Tuesday named Joe Biden as their presidential candidate for 2020, formally designating the Washington veteran as the rival of current President Donald Trump’s party in the November election.

In an unprecedented roll-call vote that took place entirely online due to the coronavirus pandemic, all 50 states and seven territories announced their vote counts that consolidated Biden’s role as the party’s representative.

“Thank you very, very much, from the bottom of my heart,” said a beaming Biden in a live video link while celebrating the nomination.

“It means the world to me and my family,” he added, reminding viewers that he will give a formal acceptance speech on Thursday, at the end of the four-day convention.

The appointment was a formality, as he had already won the majority of the more than 3,900 delegates in June.
