Brazil: Research shows potential for expanding telework

Research by the Faculty of Economics and Administration of the University of São Paulo (FEA-USP) in partnership with the Fundação Instituto de Administração (FIA) shows that there is a great potential for expanding home office work in Brazil, after the covid-19 pandemic , in higher education positions, managers and teachers.

The study surveyed 1,566 home office professionals.

According to the survey, workers interviewed reported high levels of satisfaction with their work at home and a perception that their performance was positively impacted by the teleworking modality: 70% said they would like to continue working in the home office after the pandemic; 19%, who would not like it; and 11%, who are indifferent.

According to one of the coordinators of the study, professor at USP André Luiz Fischer, isolation and the consequent work in the home office, triggered by the pandemic of the covid-19, served to unlock the migration from work in the office to the home.

“Several cognitive barriers that hindered this migration were broken. In addition, the isolation caused a forced and immediate learning of tools that we previously only knew as facilitators of conversations and virtual social meetings. They became work tools and worked, ”he said.

The survey also shows that, of the interviewees, 94% consider themselves committed to the company they work for, indicating that the practice of the home office did not interfere in this assessment. For 71%, working at home is perceived as a possibility to increase productivity, precision and quality; and 76% said they agreed that working in the home office is compatible with family life.

“Companies are wondering why to pay for expensive rentals, and people, at least in São Paulo, why spend more than 60 minutes, on average, on the way to the office. It is worth making it clear that these findings apply to more qualified workers with good monthly income. Both with regard to the greater potential for work at home, as well as the greater motivation to adhere to this proposal, ”said Fisher.

According to the survey, the interviewees are, on average, 40 years old, and eight years old in the current company, highly qualified and occupy senior positions. The salaries of the people interviewed are around R $ 9.4 thousand. The interviews took place between May 27th and June 3rd.
