Threatened by China’s rise, Japan resumes offensive military capability

Country rules out anti-missile defense system and admits to using force vetoed by the Constitution

Alarmed by the rise of China, an unpredictable North Korea and the low confidence that Donald Trump inspires, Japan has taken another step to resume its offensive military capabilities.

On Friday (26), the country’s National Security Council buried plans to install the American Aegis Ashore anti-missile system at two points on its largest island, Honshu.

The decision stems from a review of costs and complaints from residents of nearby cities, made obvious targets, but has a greater strategic implication. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that, as an option, Japan is studying whether to arm itself with missiles capable of attacking enemy country bases before they launch their rockets.
