American gambling dealerships at high risk, says analyst

American gambling dealers are in serious danger of leaving Macau, with the United States’ decision to fail to recognize Hong Kong’s degree of autonomy vis-à-vis China, says analyst Ben Lee.

Less than two years from the new tender for the allocation of the next gaming concessions and at a time of great tension between China and the United States, the scenario for operators Wynn, Sands China and MGM has worsened. “The risk of not obtaining new concessions is between high and extremely high, depending on the American dealership we are talking about. In relation to the one with the strongest links to Trump, the risk is more than 50 percent ”, understands Ben Lee, referring to Sands China, by Sheldon Adelson, one of the main funders of the campaign of the President of the United States.

Ben Lee argues that Hong Kong is being used by Donald Trump as a “battlefront against China” and that, at this point, Beijing “has already lost all hope of reaching an agreement” in the “trade war”. The tensions between the two countries, exacerbated by the exchange of accusations about the origin of the new type of coronavirus, lead the analyst to argue that the chances of new operators entering the gambling market in Macau are increasing. “Without a doubt [that there will be new competition]”, he says, anticipating that, operators that “lose the contest will have between 12 to 18 months to negotiate the exit strategy with the winning concessionaires”.
