Diamonds lose market

Hélder Jeremias

Angola is expected to produce eight million carats of diamonds this year, two million below expectations, due to the limitations imposed by the new coronavirus pandemic, according to the president of the National Diamond Company (Endiama), Ganga Júnior.

Speaking on the sidelines of the act of publicizing the winners of the public tender for granting mining rights, held yesterday by the Ministry of Petroleum, Geology and Mines, in Luanda, Ganga explained that the company is already working on its restructuring, to increase production and position among the three largest diamond mining companies in the world.

To that end, said Ganga Júnior, the existing mines are being improved, with emphasis on the old Luô concession, while trying to start the exploration, experimentally, of the Luaxi mine (Lunda-Sul), to increase in production capacity.

In 2019, the diamond sector in Angola produced nine million, 121 thousand and 515.07 carats, exploited by 12 mining companies.
