Under current law, the deadline for obtaining nationality is two years, but the Socialists intend to reduce it.

The children of immigrants who have lived in Portugal for a year may become Portuguese, if an amendment to the nationality law is approved, under discussion in Parliament.

The deputy of the PS and coordinator of the working group Constança Urbano de Sousa told Lusa that there is “a consensus” in this regard obtained in the last few weeks, but that the vote on the specialty will only take place at a meeting of the committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, still without a set date, so it is not possible to have a forecast of when the legislative process will be concluded.
