Number of smokers among patients with Covid-19 is less than expected
Studies among patients with Covid-19 reveal a lower percentage than that of the general population.
A study carried out in Paris hospitals confirmed an earlier one, Chinese: the proportion of smokers among patients with Covid-19 – inpatients and outpatients – is much lower than what would be expected in the case of a disease that affects the respiratory system.
Even without providing an explanation, the researchers warn that tobacco, in itself, kills much more than the new coronavirus (75 thousand people per year in France). But it has already led to the proposal for therapeutic trials with transdermal patches, as nicotine and its receptors may be involved.
