Tired of running away from the security forces, Gladys Rangel takes off her homemade protective mask and rests, without finding anyone to sell her bags of peppers and lemons for 5 cents on the dollar. “If I don’t die of the virus, I’ll starve to death,” this 57-year-old woman tells AFP.
Gladys has lived in this slum of about 400,000 inhabitants in Caracas, a cluster of poor houses built untidily on the mountains since the middle of the last century, where water, gas and garbage collection services are precarious.
