The city of Belfast and neighboring towns in Northern Ireland are experiencing a second consecutive night of riots following the stabbing of a resident by an immigrant who is currently in police custody.
According to British and Irish media outlets present in Belfast, the police have already deployed water cannons to disperse demonstrators in Sandyknowes, on the outskirts of Belfast, after approximately 200 people gathered and threw rocks and bottles at officers attempting to contain them. A truck was also set on fire during the intense clashes.
The violent protests emerged in the wake of a case that attracted national attention due to the online distribution of explicit videos of the attack and the involvement of an immigrant, which prompted criticism from some political parties.
The police reported that the victim was taken to the hospital on Monday night with severe injuries to the face, neck, and back. According to the authorities, the alleged perpetrator, a man in his 30s, was arrested under suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody after a kitchen knife was found at the crime scene.

The family of the young stabbing victim issued a statement expressing that they are repulsed by the scenes that unfolded on Tuesday across Northern Ireland.
They wanted to make it absolutely clear that their family does not support this type of reaction and that peaceful protest is always the only way forward. The family noted that many migrants make an extremely valuable contribution to the country, particularly in the healthcare system and hospitality sector, and that the nation depends on them to function properly.
The relatives added that they do not want this terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility, asking the public not to do this in the name of their family member as they do not share those values.
The portal Belfast Live reported that the crowd confronting the police today was attempting to aggressively reach the Chimney Court Hotel, a location where immigrants are routinely accommodated while awaiting the final resolution of their political asylum applications.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland had already warned hours earlier that contact details and specific addresses of immigrants had been shared online, inciting new protests after receiving calls from families, landlords, neighbors, and other community members who are distressed as a consequence of this irresponsible activity.
In Glengormley, the police also utilized water cannons against the crowds, according to reports by the BBC. Another location where disturbances repeated was in Newtownabbey, where groups of hooded youths threw objects.
The cities of Derry and Stormont were also scenes of protests and riots, with tires burned in the streets at various points across the territory. However, the scenes of vandalism from Tuesday night have not been repeated so far, when demonstrators—mostly hooded youths—set fire to several accommodation centers where immigrants are housed, forcing multiple families to quickly abandon the premises.
Anticipating what could happen, numerous commercial establishments across the province closed doors early, and public transport services canceled lines.

The images of the attack triggered an avalanche of hate comments on social media networks and calls to demonstrate in the streets of Belfast, comments incited by Tommy Robinson or tech mogul Elon Musk from the United States.
Local authorities continue to appeal for calm as security forces remain heavily deployed across the most volatile neighborhoods to prevent further escalations of violence. The government has condemned the riots, stating that the criminal behavior of a small minority will be met with the full force of the law.
