Macau’s hotel establishments welcomed 4.87 million guests until April, marking a new record high for the first four months of a year, it was announced today. According to official data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) of the Chinese semi-autonomous region, this figure represents an increase of 1.9% compared to the same period in 2025.

Furthermore, it is the highest number recorded since DSEC began compiling these specific data sets in 1998, prior to Macau’s administration transition from Portugal to China.

The previous record high for the first four months of a year was established back in 2019, before the start of the covid-19 pandemic, with 4.66 million guests. With more guests arriving, the territory’s hotel establishments saw 91.8% of their rooms occupied between January and April, which is 2.2 percentage points higher than the same period in 2025.

At the end of April, Macau possessed 147 hotels and guesthouses, an all-time high, offering around 45,400 rooms, which is 500 more than a year earlier, DSEC noted.

Also last month, Macau’s Land and Urban Construction Bureau stated that three hotels were under construction, totaling 204 rooms, with an additional 10 in the design phase that could provide 1,310 rooms. In April alone, the average occupancy rate of hotel establishments rose by 2.4 percentage points to 90.2%, while the total number of guests dipped by 0.8 percentage points compared to the same month last year, falling to 1.19 million.

This occurred after hotels increased their average prices in April by 1.7% to 1,323 patacas (141 euros), according to data from the Macau Hotel Association, which represents 48 local establishments.

According to the report released by the Macao Government Tourism Office last week, the highest increase was recorded in four-star hotels, whose average price rose 4.1% to 1,043 patacas (111 euros).

In 2025, the establishments that form part of the Macau Hotel Association had cut their average prices by 3.5%. The region received 14.7 million visitors during the first four months, up 13.1% from the same period in 2025 and the highest value ever for the start of a year.

However, 62.1% of these visitors arrived in organized tour groups and spent less than a single day inside the city. “We have more and more tourists, but the level of consumption is dropping,” warned Macau’s Government leader, Sam Hou Fai, in May 2025. The average consumption of each visitor in Macau, excluding gambling inside casinos, fell by 7.3% in 2025 to two thousand patacas (around 212 euros).

But in the first quarter of this year, the per capita non-gaming expenditure of tourists rose 9.5% annually to 2,179 patacas (233 euros).
