Italian sensation Kimi Antonelli strengthened his grip on the Formula 1 World Championship by driving his Mercedes to victory at a dramatic Canadian Grand Prix. The win marks Antonelli’s fourth consecutive victory of the season, solidifying his status as the sport’s breakout star.

Starting second on the grid, Antonelli capitalized on a heartbreaking retirement for his pole-sitting teammate, George Russell. The two Mercedes drivers had engaged in a fierce, wheel-to-wheel battle during the opening half of the race, swapping the lead multiple times in a display reminiscent of the classic 2014 duel between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

However, the teammate rivalry concluded abruptly on Lap 30 when Russell’s car suffered a sudden power unit failure, forcing him to stop on track. The subsequent Virtual Safety Car reshuffled the pack, leaving Antonelli with a comfortable lead over the field.

From that point forward, the championship leader managed his pace masterfully, crossing the finish line 10.768 seconds ahead of seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, who delivered a standout second-place finish for Ferrari. Max Verstappen completed the podium, finishing third for Red Bull to secure his first podium finish of the season.

With this victory, Antonelli has amassed 131 points at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, establishing a commanding 43-point lead over Russell, who remains in second place with 88 points despite his retirement.

Behind the Mercedes pair, Charles Leclerc occupies third place in the standings with 75 points after bringing his Ferrari home in fourth, just ahead of Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto.

The race also featured high drama before the lights even went out. Technical issues for Racing Bulls’ Arvid Lindblad on the grid necessitated three separate formation laps, which ultimately shortened the total race distance to 68 laps.

A tire gamble by McLaren to start Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri on intermediate tires initially paid dividends when Norris surged into the lead at Turn 1. However, as the predicted heavy rainfall failed to materialize, both McLaren drivers were forced into early pit stops for slick tires, ruining their race strategies. Piastri finished outside the points in 11th, while Norris was eventually forced to retire.
