Scientists have developed a system that harnesses the brain’s natural ability to filter out sounds in a complex environment to dynamically isolate the specific conversation a user wishes to hear.

For decades, researchers have sought to replicate the human brain’s capacity to detect a specific voice amidst a noisy crowd. They have now obtained the first direct evidence of a hearing technology controlled by the human brain.

This breakthrough, achieved by the Zuckerman Institute at Columbia University in the United States, represents a major step forward in developing amplification devices that can overcome the limitations of conventional hearing aids in noisy settings. The details were published Monday in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Nima Mesgarani, principal investigator at the Zuckerman Institute, noted that this advancement allows scientists to look beyond traditional hearing aids—which simply amplify sound—and envision a future where technology restores the sophisticated, selective hearing of the human brain.

To conduct the study, the authors worked with epilepsy patients from hospitals in New York and the University of California, San Francisco. These patients already had surgically implanted electrodes used to identify the source of their seizures. The team used this interface to perform an experiment where volunteers listened to two simultaneous conversations.

The system automatically detected which conversation the patient was focusing on and adjusted the volume in real time, boosting the target voice while silencing the other.

For the volunteers, the experience was described as “literally incredible” and akin to “science fiction.” While modern hearing aids can suppress background noise like traffic, they struggle to isolate specific voices of interest, often indiscriminately amplifying all nearby speech. A potential solution lies in a device capable of mimicking the “cocktail party effect,” the brain’s natural way of focusing on a single person amidst a din.

“The main open question was whether brain-controlled hearing technology could move beyond incremental advances toward a prototype that could help someone hear better in real time,” explained Vishal Choudhari, first author of the paper.

“For the first time, we have demonstrated that such a system, which reads brain signals to selectively improve conversations, can provide a clear benefit in real time. This takes brain-controlled hearing from theory to practical application.”

According to the World Health Organization, over 430 million people worldwide live with disabling hearing loss, many of whom face significant challenges in noisy social environments. Untreated hearing loss is also a risk factor for dementia, depression, and social isolation.

The ultimate goal for these researchers is to develop portable, non-invasive systems—potentially integrated into over-the-ear or in-ear devices—that can read brain waves through the skin or using less invasive sensors.
