“There was consensus on the need to continue the relentless fight against networks that facilitate illegal immigration, and to strengthen return mechanisms,” say the EU’s Interior Ministers.

The European Union’s (EU) Interior Ministers agreed today that it is necessary to strengthen borders and “return mechanisms” for migrants, following a videoconference meeting dedicated to the crisis at the Ceuta border.

In a statement released at the end of that meeting, the Council of the EU noted that the ministers exchanged “views on the importance of protecting” the bloc’s “external borders.”

“There was consensus on the need to continue the relentless fight against networks that facilitate illegal immigration, strengthen return mechanisms, reinforce the EU’s borders, develop solid partnerships with third countries and improve anticipation capacity,” the statement reads.
