Macau received nearly 873,000 visitors during the five-day Labor Day holiday period, a figure that fell short of the forecasts set by the territory’s authorities, it was announced today.

The Public Security Police (PSP) of Macau indicated that the territory’s borders recorded the passage of 873,229 visitors between May 1 and May 5, resulting in a daily average of 174,645 visitors. Authorities in Macau had originally predicted a daily average of between 210,000 and 220,000 visitors, with an expected total of 1.1 million visitors during one of the country’s busiest tourism periods.

Despite falling below expectations, the total recorded figure represented a 2.7% increase compared to the same holiday period last year. Tourists from mainland China accounted for 83% of the total, while visitors from Hong Kong and Taiwan represented 10.8% and 1.3%, respectively, with international tourists making up only 4.9%. The second day of the holiday, May 2, set a new historical record for Macau, with nearly 248,000 tourists entering the region.

Nearly 3.8 million people crossed Macau’s border control points during the five days, an average of 762,526 daily crossings, which actually exceeded the PSP’s forecast of 3.6 to 3.7 million people made last week. Between January and March, Macau recorded more than 11.2 million visitors, a 13.7% increase over the same period in 2025 and a record in the territory’s history for the first three months of the year.

Golden Weeks are used as an indicator of economic activity in China, which seeks to boost consumption and services as drivers of domestic demand that has not yet fully recovered since the pandemic. In the previous Golden Week, the nine-day Lunar New Year holiday in mainland China—known as the world’s largest annual migration—Macau received nearly 1.6 million visitors.
