Atlético Madrid claimed a famous 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona at Camp Nou, taking a strong advantage into the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie.

Goals from Julián Alvarez and Alexander Sørloth secured the win for Diego Simeone’s side, who capitalized on a pivotal first-half red card to Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí.

Barcelona started brightly, with Marcus Rashford and Lamine Yamal causing problems down the flanks. However, the match turned dramatically just before halftime.

Cubarsí was sent off in the 44th minute after bringing down Giuliano Simeone, leaving the hosts a man down. Moments later, Atlético made the advantage count as Julián Alvarez produced a stunning free-kick, curling the ball over the wall and into the top corner to give the visitors the lead.

After the break, Hansi Flick’s side responded with urgency. Rashford came close in the 50th minute after rounding goalkeeper Juan Musso, but his effort hit the side netting. The English forward also tested Musso shortly after with a dipping free-kick that required a sharp save.

Despite Barcelona’s pressure, Atlético remained composed and clinical. Substitute Alexander Sørloth sealed the victory, finishing expertly from a low cross delivered by Matteo Ruggeri.

The result ended Barcelona’s 26-match unbeaten home run against Atlético dating back to 2006, while it also marked Atlético Madrid’s first away victory against Spanish opposition in the Champions League.

The second leg will take place in Madrid on Tuesday, where Atlético will look to defend their advantage and secure a place in the semi-finals.
