TotalEnergies president Patrick Pouyanné said today in Brussels that security conditions are guaranteed for the continuation of the gas megaproject, assuring that it “will never stop again.”

“Security is good today. We will continue to work,” he told journalists in Brussels after meeting with Mozambican president Daniel Chapo. “You can be sure that this project will never stop again. We are not going to stop, of course. We are here to make it a reality, not just for Mozambique, but also for Europe and for the world,” Pouyanné added.

He said the megaproject will continue to be developed for gas exploitation in the Rovuma basin and pledged to return to Mozambique to follow its progress.

“The next step is to continue building. As you know, we are building the project and I will probably go to Maputo at some point to continue having this kind of contact. It is very important to maintain a good relationship between the president of Mozambique and myself, because this is a gigantic $20 billion project. So it is good to be aligned and to regularly review progress,” he said.

The gas exploitation megaproject at the Afungi peninsula officially resumed construction of its LNG production and export unit on January 29, having been suspended since April 2021 when TotalEnergies invoked a force majeure clause following extremist attacks in Cabo Delgado province. President Chapo described the resumption as a symbol of “resilience, courage and determination,” with gas exports expected to begin in 2029.

The project is valued at $20 billion (€17.5 billion) with capacity to produce 13 million tonnes per year from the offshore Rovuma basin — TotalEnergies’ largest investment in Africa.

Mozambique has three approved megaprojects for exploiting LNG reserves in the Rovuma basin, classified among the world’s largest. In addition to TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil has an 18 mtpa project worth $30 billion (€26.1 billion) awaiting a final investment decision, also at Afungi.

Italian company Eni has been producing around 7 mtpa since 2022 from the Coral Sul floating platform, which will be doubled from 2028 with the Coral Norte platform in a $7.2 billion (€6.2 billion) investment.
