International donations to Cape Verde fell 1.8% in 2025, after two years of growth, according to central bank data consulted today by Lusa.
According to the Bank of Cape Verde, external aid totalled 6.7 billion escudos (around €61 million). Although the archipelago received more donations in foreign currency and current goods, the difference did not offset declines in budget support and equipment donations.
Bilateral aid dominates: partner governments account for 62% (nearly two thirds) of all donations, with the remainder coming from supranational organisations.
Over the past decade, Cape Verde recorded its lowest donation level in 2022 at 4 billion escudos (€36 million), before growing 25% the following year and 33% in 2024, until last year’s decline. The government has noted that the country should prepare to receive fewer donations as it develops, and incorporate that principle into policies aimed at mobilising domestic resources.
