Mozambique received 4.3 billion meticais (€58.1 million) in donations and monetary support for flood and inundation victims, who have already affected more than 870,000 people, the government announced today.

“At all levels, donations were channelled in the form of food, clothing, shelter materials and monetary contributions, estimated at 4.3 billion meticais, of which around 1.3 billion in monetary value,” said minister of state administration and public service Inocêncio Impissa, presenting the latest tally of goods received while responding to MPs’ questions in parliament.

At least 270 people have died in the current rainy season in Mozambique since October, affecting more than 870,000 people — 725,000 of them in January’s floods alone, in which around 40 people died, mainly in the south.

Impissa explained that the monetary aid received is being used to reinforce the acquisition of food and non-food goods for assistance to populations affected by the floods. On March 3, the Mozambican government had already reported receiving 1.3 billion meticais (€17.5 million) and 6,700 tonnes of various goods.

Regarding infrastructure recovery, the government said it is in the final stages of drafting the 2026 Post-Flood Global Reconstruction Plan, which aims to ensure resilient and sustainable reconstruction and relaunch the local economy.

Under the plan, the government expects to carry out immediate humanitarian assistance, restore social services including access to health, education, water, sanitation and energy, and normalise state and local economic functioning in affected areas.

The reconstruction plan includes: rehabilitation of 38 educational establishments, 1,369 classrooms and 136 health units; restoration of water supply systems in Chókwè, Ressano Garcia, Boane, Xai-Xai, Bilene-Macia, Massingir and Morrumbene, as well as 686 water supply points; rehabilitation of 5,697 kilometres of road, 684 km of railway, 16 bridges, 98 aqueducts and 16 km of power transmission lines; replacement of 92 transformer posts, installation of 25 km of medium-voltage line and restoration of 410 transformer stations; rehabilitation of 250 km of medium-voltage and 206 km of low-voltage lines; and rehabilitation of five dams including Pequenos Libombos, Massingir, Macarretane, Corumana and Nampula, plus the restoration of 125 water resource monitoring networks.

On January 27, the Mozambican government estimated the value of infrastructure destroyed and damaged by the floods at $644 million (€537.6 million).
