The President of East Timor today condemned the offensive by Israel and the United States against Iran, highlighting that the actions violate the United Nations Charter and international law, as well as Tehran’s retaliatory attacks on several countries in the region.

“The attacks by the United States and Israel on a non-nuclear-armed country, as well as the assassination of Iran’s spiritual leader, constitute a clear violation of the UN Charter and International Law,” said José Ramos-Horta in a press statement.

In the statement, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate emphasized that “no clear argument of self-defense was presented, nor was there evidence of an imminent threat against those countries.”

“These tactics set an alarming precedent, in which countries with greater military capacity systematically violate International Law and also establish an unpredictable, inconsistent, and highly personalized doctrine in international relations. This will only encourage others to act in the same way,” said the Timorese head of state.

José Ramos-Horta also condemned Iran’s attacks on U.S. interests in several regional countries.

“We condemn Iran’s attacks on the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. These countries, targets of Iranian strikes, were clear and firm in their opposition to the use of their territory and airspace for military operations against Iran,” the Timorese President said.

Israel and the United States launched a military strike against Iran on Saturday to “eliminate imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” and Tehran responded with missiles and drones targeting U.S. bases in the region and Israeli targets.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated the operation aimed to “eliminate imminent threats” from Iran, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the joint action against what he called an “existential threat.”

Iran confirmed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader since 1989, and declared a 40-day mourning period.

According to the Iranian Red Crescent, at least 200 people were killed and about 750 injured.

Portugal, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom also condemned Iran’s attacks on neighboring countries.
