Portuguese-speaking countries imported a record value of Chinese products in 2025

Portuguese-speaking countries imported $88.1 billion worth of goods from China in 2025, a 3.1% year-on-year increase and the highest amount ever recorded

The figure, equivalent to €74.8 billion, is the highest since the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau Forum) began publishing these statistics in 2013.

Brazil remained the largest buyer within the Lusophone bloc, despite imports from China falling 0.7% compared to 2024, to $71.6 billion (€60.7 billion), according to data from China’s Customs Services.

By contrast, the second-largest importer, Portugal, purchased $7.19 billion (€6.1 billion) worth of Chinese goods, an increase of 17.7%.

In the opposite direction, exports from Portuguese-speaking countries to China fell 1.4% in 2025, to $137.7 billion (€116.9 billion), the lowest level since 2021, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decline was largely driven by Angola, the second-largest Lusophone supplier to the Chinese market, whose exports fell 9.1% to $16 billion (€13.6 billion).

Exports from Portugal — the third most important Chinese trading partner within the Lusophone bloc — also dropped 10.2% to $2.85 billion (€2.42 billion).

Five of the nine Portuguese-speaking countries recorded declines in exports to China.

Exports from Mozambique fell 11.9% to $1.59 billion (€1.35 billion), while shipments from Equatorial Guinea dropped 20.6% to $779.8 million (€662.1 million). Exports from Cabo Verde to China declined 40.9%, although the country sold only around $8,000 (€6,800) worth of goods.

By contrast, exports from Brazil — by far the largest Lusophone supplier to China — rose 0.3% to $116.4 billion (€98.8 billion). The largest increase was recorded by Timor-Leste, whose exports surged from just $881,000 (€748,000) in 2024 to $27.2 million (€23.1 million) in 2025.

Exports from São Tomé and Príncipe more than tripled to $54,000 (€46,000), while shipments from Guinea-Bissau increased from $1,000 (€850) to $8,000. Despite exporting more and importing less, China continued to post a trade deficit with the Lusophone bloc, which reached $49.6 billion (€42.1 billion) in 2025.

Overall, trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries totalled $225.8 billion (€191.6 billion), up 0.3% from the previous year.
