The European statistical office confirmed the estimate indicating a slowdown in the indicator to 1.7%, compared with 2.5% in January 2025 and 2.0% on a month-on-month basis, according to a bulletin released this Wednesday by Eurostat.
In the European Union, the annual inflation rate eased to 2.0%, down from 2.8% year-on-year and 2.3% in December 2025.
Among the member states, the lowest inflation rates measured by the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP, which allows for comparisons) were recorded in France (0.4%), Denmark (0.6%), and both Finland and Italy (1.0% each).

By contrast, the highest rates were observed in Romania (8.5%), Slovakia (4.3%) and Estonia (3.8%).
In Portugal, the annual inflation rate in January, as measured by the HICP, stood at 1.9%, below the 2.7% recorded a year earlier and the 2.4% seen in December 2025.
Core inflation — which excludes more volatile components such as food and energy — slowed to 2.2% in January, compared with 2.7% in the same month last year and 2.3% in December 2025.
