Iran eyes ‘better’ nuclear deal ahead of talks with US envoy

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated last Sunday that reaching a nuclear agreement superior to the 2015 deal is possible and confirmed plans to meet with a senior U.S. envoy in Geneva to renew negotiations

Speaking in an interview with CBS, Araghchi emphasized that while the geopolitical landscape has shifted since the original accord, a new framework could offer improvements over the decade-old version. The comments come as Tehran prepares to re-engage diplomatically with Washington regarding its nuclear program, according to Xinhua.

Araghchi revealed that he is scheduled to meet with U.S. President’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on Thursday in Geneva, Switzerland.

He noted that Iran is currently drafting a proposal to present to the American delegation and expressed optimism that both sides could reach an agreement rapidly.

Addressing the contentious issue of uranium enrichment, Araghchi reiterated Iran’s rights as a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

He acknowledged that enrichment remains a “sensitive part” of the negotiations but maintained that Iran retains the right to peaceful nuclear energy.

“We know each other’s positions, and I believe we can find a solution,” Araghchi said, referring to the impasse over enrichment activities.

The Foreign Minister declined to comment on whether the U.S. might use military threats as leverage. Instead, he asserted that diplomacy remains the “only path” to resolving the nuclear standoff.

He further clarified that the upcoming talks in Geneva would focus exclusively on the nuclear file, excluding other regional or political issues.
