Speaking to journalists, Orbán said: “If Donald Trump had been president, this war would not have started. And if he were not president now, we wouldn’t even have a chance to achieve peace.”
The Hungarian leader added that Budapest remains “available” to host a peace summit if the opportunity arises.
However, Hungary has maintained a position at odds with other Western allies, keeping close ties with Moscow and refusing to send weapons to Ukraine. The country has also opposed the European Commission’s plan to gradually phase out all Russian natural gas and LNG imports by 2027, further straining relations with Brussels over energy policy and ties with Russia.
International analysts view these statements as part of Orbán’s strategy to position Hungary as a neutral and diplomatic interlocutor in the conflict, while maintaining economic and political relations with Moscow.
