Ronaldo skips Al Nassr match as tensions rise with Saudi investment fund

Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision not to feature for Al Nassr in Monday’s Saudi Pro League match against Al Riyadh is linked to growing tensions between the Portuguese star and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). The discontent is not new and dates back to the start of the current season.

The situation worsened after the PIF sold its controlling stake in Al Hilal to Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud. Since the ownership change, Al Hilal have significantly increased their investment in the transfer market, strengthening their squad with a clear focus on winning the domestic title.

By contrast, Al Nassr, which remains under PIF control and is still up for sale, has failed to attract what are seen as credible buyers and has seen its ability to sign reinforcements curtailed. The lack of investment, coupled with the freedom given to a direct rival to strengthen, has reportedly intensified Ronaldo’s frustration.

Ronaldo is also said to be unhappy with the reduced influence of Al Nassr’s current leadership within the club. Sporting director Simão Coutinho and chief executive José Semedo, both close to the player, have allegedly been sidelined by the investment fund in key decision-making processes.

The pressure exerted by Ronaldo in recent hours has caused unrest within Saudi football circles and prompted the PIF to reconsider its position, with the fund now reportedly considering the signing of two high-profile reinforcements for Al Nassr.

With the Saudi transfer window set to close on Monday, February 2, time is running out for any major moves.

Until further notice, Cristiano Ronaldo remains determined not to take the field for Jorge Jesus’s side against Al Riyadh, although a late turnaround in the situation is not being ruled out.
