Most candidates in north on eighth day of Portugal’s presidential campaign

Early voting for mobility takes place on Sunday, one week before the presidential elections, with most candidates focusing their campaign activities on the north of the country.

More than 218,000 voters are registered to vote early today in next Sunday’s presidential elections, and can exercise their right to vote in their chosen municipality.

On the eighth day of the campaign, António José Seguro, supported by the PS, visits the Angeiras market in Matosinhos in the morning, then heads to Aveiro where he has lunch and meets with the population, and in the late afternoon, he has a session at the Sá de Miranda Municipal Theatre in Viana do Castelo.

The candidate supported by the PSD and the CDS, Luís Marques Mendes, will also visit the district of Aveiro, where he will meet the population at Praia do Furadouro in the morning, have lunch with supporters in São João da Madeira and, in the late afternoon, head to the district of Viseu to meet the population and hold a meeting with supporters in Lamego.

The president of Chega and presidential candidate André Ventura will also be in the districts of Viseu and Aveiro, where he will hold street rallies in the respective district capitals at the end of the morning and the end of the afternoon.

Henrique Gouveia e Melo heads to the district of Bragança to visit the Boticas Gastronomic Fair and meet with the population in Chaves, then travels to the district of Viana do Castelo where he has a rally in Ponte de Lima.

Jorge Pinto, supported by Livre, will be in Aveiro this morning, where he will meet with the population, and will spend the rest of the day in Coimbra, where he will meet with the Academic Association of Coimbra, visit the exhibition “4 Elements – Caring for a Country” and hold a rally with Livre spokespersons Rui Tavares and Isabel Mendes Lopes.

The BE-supported candidate Catarina Martins will also be in Coimbra to visit the “left bank markets” at the University of Coimbra’s Centro Ciência Viva in the morning, before heading to Porto, where she will visit the “happiness laboratory” in the late afternoon.

In the south of the country, João Cotrim Figueiredo, supported by the Liberal Initiative, will visit the Livramento market in Setúbal and have lunch with the Danish ambassador in Lisbon.

António Filipe, supported by the PCP, will spend the day in Lisbon, where in the morning he will have a conversation “about children and parents with rights” at Voz do Operário and, in the afternoon, a rally at the Casal Vistoso Municipal Pavilion.

Candidate André Pestana has an event in Coimbra on fires, entitled “Firefighting must be done all year round”.

Painter Humberto Correia and musician Manuel João Vieira are also running in the 18 January presidential elections.

The winner of this election will succeed Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who was elected in 2016 and whose term ends in March.

If none of the candidates obtains an absolute majority, a second round will be held on 8 February, in which only the two candidates with the most votes will compete.
