Nicolas Sarkozy left his home in the 16th arrondissement of Paris this morning, hand in hand with his wife, Carla Bruni, and headed to La Santé prison, where he is beginning to serve a five-year sentence.
Convicted of criminal conspiracy in the so-called “Libya affair,” the former French president is accused of benefiting from illegal funds from Muammar Gaddafi’s regime to finance his 2007 presidential campaign.
At 70, the former head of state, who governed from 2007 to 2012, remains steadfast in his defense. “I’m not afraid of prison. I will hold my head high, even at the prison gates,” he said in an interview with the newspaper “La Tribune” before turning himself in to authorities. On social media, he reiterated his innocence and denounced “a judicial vendetta” that has haunted him for over a decade.
