Araújo said that the assault and robbery had political motives; they accused RTP of “denigrating the image of Guinea-Bissau abroad”. The journalist, who has been RTP’s correspondent in Bissau since 2019, preferred to speak in more detail about the incident after filing a complaint with the Judicial Police and receiving medical treatment at home.

The blog “Ditadura Sem Consenso” (Dictatorship Without Consensus) published images that reported the assault and robbery, and Waldir Araújo appears in them with part of his face covered in blood.

A source from the Guinea-Bissau Union of Journalists and Media Technicians (Sinjotecs) told Lusa that the organisation is monitoring the situation and gathering information to take a position.
