POP MART MACAO CITYWALK|A Tour Through Four Districts

Until September 21, visitors walking through various areas of Macao may encounter unfamiliar figures in familiar places. A new collaboration between the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and the Chinese brand POP MART has introduced four characters to four historical districts of Macao, creating an open-air trail that connects heritage areas with elements of pop culture.

The initiative, called POP MART MACAO CITYWALK, features large-scale installations of Baby Molly, CRYBABY, DIMOO, and LABUBU across four locations. Each one is set in a different district — from the historical center to the Taipa leisure zone — offering residents and tourists a temporary visual encounter between the imaginative universe of POP MART and the architectural or natural landscape of Macao.

Taipa:

LABUBU in the Leisure Zone

In the Leisure area in Rua do Pai Kok, in Taipa, the character LABUBU brings a different kind of energy. Originating from the “THE MONSTERS” series, LABUBU is described as curious, a tad mischievous, and full of unpredictable charm — a trickster figure with nine teeth and an untamed look.

The area receives regular foot traffic, especially from families and tourists. In this context, LABUBU’s installation feels more integrated into the space’s informal tone, acting as a visual stop within a more dynamic landscape.

Camões Square:

A short walk from the busy commercial streets of central Macao, Camões Garden is one of the city’s oldest public spaces. Known for its shaded paths and poetic legacy of Luís de Camões, the garden now features CRYBABY, a character designed to channel deep emotion and vulnerability.

Positioned near the pavilion area, CRYBABY seems to reflect — perhaps unintentionally — the quiet atmosphere of the park. The installation blends into the natural surroundings without much disruption, adding a curious note to the garden.

Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro:

Baby Molly Between Tradition and Culture

One of the quieter heritage zones of the city, the Calçada da Igreja de S. Lázaro has long been associated with the visual arts.

The installation of Baby Molly, a character often described as a dreamer with a curious and independent spirit, adds a contemporary layer to an area defined by its Portuguese façades, galleries and the cultural programming of the Albergue SCM. Baby Molly’s soft colour palette and stylised expression contrast with the austere stonework of the nearby church.

The sculpture is already drawing attention from families and passers-by, offering a contemporary addition to an area primarily known for its cultural institutions and historical architecture.

St. Augustine’s Square:

DIMOO in the Historic Centre

In the St. Augustine’s Square, DIMOO has been installed just steps away from the church and Dom Pedro V Theatre — both part of the city’s UNESCO-listed heritage. Described as a gentle, introspective boy who lives among the clouds, DIMOO often embodies a sense of wonder and philosophical calm, making the choice of location a fitting one.

For visitors already passing through the area for cultural or historical reasons, DIMOO offers a contrasting visual, loosely aligned with the quieter tone of the space.

Toy Culture in a Tourist City

The POP MART MACAO CITYWALK is part of MGTO’s broader strategy to diversify the city’s tourism offerings through cultural and creative events. While the initiative is temporary, it follows a wider pattern of using public art and design to animate urban spaces, particularly in districts already associated with leisure or heritage.

By inviting a brand like POP MART, known for its strong visual identity and youth appeal, “the project aims to capture the attention of fans and potential visitors from around the world, spotlighting Macao as a trending topic and expanding its international tourism market,” explains the Macao Government Tourism Office.

To make the experience more interactive, visitors can collect exclusive postcards at each location by sharing photos on social media using the hashtag #POPMARTMACAOCITYWALK, or by gathering the five special stamps forming the word “M‑A‑C‑A‑O”, available across the participating sites.

Additionally, a lucky draw featuring character-themed prizes is open to those who shop at local businesses using select digital wallets.
