Macau startup contest 929 Challenge returns with new backing and broader scope

The 929 Challenge, a startup competition linking China and Portuguese-speaking countries, launched its fifth edition Thursday with expanded backing and new strategic alliances, underlining Macau’s ambitions to become a regional innovation and entrepreneurship hub.

Supported by the Macau Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DESDT) and co-organized by Forum Macau, the 2025 edition introduces deeper engagement with international partners, a newly formed Angel Investor Network, and fresh incentives for startups and university innovators.

“This platform has become indispensable in connecting startups across the GBA and Portuguese-speaking nations,” according to 929 Challenge founders Marco Rizzolio and José Alves. “This year, we’re especially excited about the strategic partnerships and investment mechanisms now in place to support long-term growth.”

The competition remains open to early- and growth-stage startups, as well as student-led university teams. A dedicated one-day networking and business-matching event will also bring together investors, entrepreneurs and corporate stakeholders in Macau.

Organizers highlighted several new developments this year. Ties with Portuguese-speaking markets have been deepened following recent delegation visits, and new partnerships have been sealed with OVIA, Connectology, and Ubimed Medicals to support solutions in smart cities, digital innovation, and health tech.

A key milestone is the launch of the Macau Angel Investor Network, established last week, aimed at offering sustained funding and mentoring for local and international ventures. In another major development, Startup Portugal has signed a memorandum of understanding with the 929 Challenge to co-organize future startup missions in Macau and the GBA.

Winners of this year’s competition will be awarded cash prizes, mentorship from sector leaders, incubation support from Macau accelerators, and access to international markets via the program’s partner network.

Last year’s edition drew record participation, with several startups securing follow-on investments and expanding overseas. Organizers hope to build on that momentum in 2025.

The 929 Challenge is evolving with Macau’s innovation ecosystem,” the organizers said. “We remain committed to empowering entrepreneurs while fostering deeper cultural and economic exchange.”

Applications for the 2025 edition open today and close on September 30, with final pitch events will take place in November.

This year’s program is supported by a host of corporate sponsors, including BNU, Millennium BCP, CEM, Fidelidade, MdME, C&C, Lektou, and integrated resorts such as Sands China, MGM and Galaxy Entertainment Group. Strategic investors KNJ Investments and Alibaba are also backing the initiative.
