Turpan, Xinjiang: ¥958 Million Grid Investment Supports Water-Saving Irrigation for 630,000 Mu of Vineyards

TURPAN, China, June 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — On June 11, staff from the State Grid Turfan Power Supply Company assisted villager Muhetaer Reheman in inspecting potential electrical hazards for well irrigation in his vineyard at Xialeke Village, Yare Town, Gaochang District, Turpan. As the valve opened, an efficient water-saving micro-spray irrigation system buried underground sprayed water, allowing the grapevines to promptly quench their thirst.

"With 7 mu of vineyards, I used to spend over ¥2,000 annually on flood irrigation. After upgrading to efficient water-saving irrigation, I now save more than ¥500 per year on water costs," Muhetaer said happily.

Turpan receives only about 16 mm of annual rainfall but experiences evaporation exceeding 3,000 mm. As the region's economic lifeline, agricultural water use accounts for 84% of the city's total consumption. Grape cultivation—the dominant specialty agriculture—is both the largest water consumer and the sector with the greatest potential for water conservation.

To comprehensively address the power demands of water-saving irrigation, State Grid Turfan Power Supply Company has proactively invested ¥958 million in recent years. This initiative included building 1,349.28 km of new 10 kV power lines and installing/upgrading 1,168 distribution transformers, providing robust support for the adoption of efficient water-saving irrigation technology.

Data shows that micro-spray irrigation saves 203 cubic meters of water per mu compared to traditional flood irrigation, achieving a water-saving rate of 22.31%. In the second half of 2024, Turpan's groundwater levels rose by 0.32 meters year-on-year, demonstrating significant progress in water resource conservation.
