The annual Inclusion Conference Series has made a triumphant return to Macau after a five-year hiatus, bringing together professionals, parents, and neurodivergent individuals from across the globe.
Organized by the Charity Association of Macau Business Readers and sponsored by gaming operators Melco Resorts & Entertainment and MGM China, the conference features a diverse range of keynotes, panels, and workshops.
Topics span from inclusive education and autism support to the role of sports in aiding neurodivergent individuals.
Paulo A. Azevedo, president of the Charity Association of Macau Business, emphasized the importance of social inclusion, stating, “Inclusion is a basic element of human rights—in education, employment, recreation, and community settings. We need to actively promote the idea of inclusion.”
A highlight of the conference was the introduction of Optism, an integrated support platform for autism families.
Founded by Hong Kong parent Carmen Li, Optism aims to address common challenges faced by autism families, such as isolation and lack of information, by providing curated resources and fostering a supportive community.
The event also showcased practical strategies for supporting neurodivergent children in educational settings.
Alice Totman and Joanne Chen, inclusive education teachers at Macau Anglican College, shared insights on establishing routines and structures for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
As the conference concludes, it leaves behind a legacy of increased awareness and a call to action for the community. Azevedo’s words resonate: “It’s not a mission impossible, far from it, but not an easy mission either, which makes it very exciting.”
The Inclusion Conference Series continues to pave the way for a more inclusive future in Macau and beyond.
