Alexei Navalny has died. Russian prison services say he “felt unwell” after walk

Alexei Navalny, the main opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has died, Russian media reported this Friday, citing prison services.

The 47-year-old Russian opponent had been transferred to a penal colony near the Ural mountain range, in the Arctic, at the end of last year. He was serving a 19-year prison sentence.

The causes of Navalny’s death are being investigated, according to the Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamal-Nenets region.

The prison services said, in a statement cited by Reuters, that Navalny “felt unwell” after a walk and that he “lost consciousness almost immediately”. They also indicate that the “institution’s medical team arrived immediately at the scene” and that an ambulance was called. “Doctors pronounced the prisoner dead. The cause of death is being determined.”
