The reason that reason does not know

Paulo Rego*

As if the drama that is plaguing Ukraine were not enough, Israel’s reaction to the vile attack by Hamas – which would not have been expected – re-raises the specter of a massacre in the Middle East that, according to Nostradamus, will lead the world to the Third World War. I said it 500 years ago and that it would be in this precise year of 2023. The danger of the conflict dragging on is real and frightening. And it is another one of those that, unavoidably, divides the United States and the Sino-Soviet bloc.

If it is true that Israel has been under siege by Arab hostility since its birth, Beijing is absolutely right to remember the historical injustice and suffering of the Palestinian people. Strictly speaking, the radical Islamic broth, unacceptable in its terrorist version, has always been fueled by a series of aggressions, which are also unacceptable. The last of which was when Donald Trump went to the Western Wall to recognize Jewish rights over East Jerusalem, sacred ground for Muslims. The Jewish people deserve their haven of shelter, which they found after the Holocaust. But only Judeo-Christian blindness explains the Anglo-Saxon disrespect for a Palestinian state – to be created and recognized.

In a radicalized world, stupidly on the way to the abyss, the evidence that there is always more than one truth – generally even contradictory – is denied. He can; but you can’t… There is; but there isn’t… It’s true, but the opposite is not a lie. If we do not put a hand on this awareness – quickly and forcefully – the prophecy of doom gains ground, however irrational it may seem. Washington guarantees Israel unconditional support for a warlike and bloody reaction. Beijing repeats the song of peace and development, but remembers the reasons behind the war. They are both right. But it is good for them to understand the serious risk they run of proving Nostradamus right.
