US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen highlights the “vital importance” of contacts between the two countries.

The United States and China have “an obligation” to manage their relationship responsibly, despite the “major disagreements” that exist between them, the US Treasury secretary said today in Beijing. “The two nations have an obligation to manage this relationship responsibly: find a way to live together and share global prosperity”, stressed Janet Yellen, at the end of a four-day trip to the Chinese capital. The official highlighted the “vital importance” of contacts between the two countries, stressing that the contacts maintained with Chinese rulers contributed to the advancement of relations between China and the US, placing them on a “firmer base”. “We believe the world is big enough for our two countries to prosper,” she declared. Since she arrived in Beijing, on Thursday, Yellen has been received by several Chinese government officials, including the prime minister, Li Qiang, in meetings in which she defended more exchanges and cooperation, despite the differences.
