Trump speaks Tuesday in Florida, the day he goes to court in New York

Former US President Donald Trump, accused in New York, announced that he will make a statement from Florida on Tuesday, the day he is due to appear in a Manhattan court.

Trump “will deliver a speech at Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach” at 20:15 (04:47 in Lisbon) on Tuesday, his office said in a statement, while preparing for “a battle,” according to the lawyers.

In an unprecedented move in US history, the 76-year-old Republican was indicted in a case related to a payment of $130,000 (€120,000) made to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016.

The charges will be made public on Tuesday.

The billionaire denounced a “false and shameful” accusation, part of a “witch hunt”.

On Sunday, the lawyers continued the media onslaught, saying they were confident the case would be dismissed by a judge.

“This case is not even legally correct. In fact, it’s a joke. It won’t survive a courtroom challenge,” one of the lawyers, Joe Tacopina, told ABC television.

“I think a fair judge would probably recognize that something is fundamentally wrong, that we are crossing the Rubicon with this political persecution,” said another Trump lawyer James Trusty, to the Fox station.

“And I happily suspect that the prosecution will be legally fragile, and the opportunity will arise for a judge to do the right thing,” he added.

Meanwhile, the former President is “preparing for battle”, said Tacopina.

Both lawyers reiterated that Donald Trump, who intends to run for president again after losing the 2020 elections, was being accused for political reasons.

“If he wasn’t a presidential candidate, he wouldn’t have been indicted,” Joe Tacopina told CNN.

According to the American media, the republican should leave his residence in Florida, on Monday, to go to New York.

On Tuesday, he is due to appear in a Manhattan courtroom to be formally notified of the charges.

“This is an absolute abuse of power. He is a tough guy (…), and someone who will be ready for this battle”, added Tacopina, to ABC.

On Friday, Trump announced that he had raised four million dollars (3.7 million euros) in 24 hours for the campaign, following the indictment.

Tuesday’s indictment will have an unprecedented ritual for a former head of state: the billionaire will have to declare his name, age, occupation, submit to the collection of fingerprints and take a photograph, as with all defendants.
