António Costa says that it will be possible in March to deliver to Ukraine the three Leopard tanks that had been made available by Portugal under the European cooperation mechanism.
The F16 fighters, on the other hand, are “all allocated to missions that we cannot do without”, due to a cooperation agreement with Romania, so it will not be possible to send any of these planes to Ukraine.
Speaking to journalists and Brussels, the prime minister recalls that “since the beginning of the war” that Portugal “has tried to support [Ukraine] within the possibilities”. First with humanitarian support – the most urgent – then with material support and now with military support.
“We are in a very decisive phase of this war, everything will be played out in the coming months”, considers António Costa, recalling that it should be Ukraine that defines the terms of peace, “as an attacked country”.
