Poland detects leak in oil pipeline linking Russia to Germany

One of the two lines of the Druzhba oil pipeline, which connects Russia to Germany, was closed after a leak was detected in central Poland, Polish company PERN announced today.

“The causes of the incident are not known at this time – pumping in the damaged line was immediately stopped. Line 2 of the pipeline is operating normally,” PERN said in a statement, adding that the leak was detected on Tuesday night.

In late September, high-powered underwater explosions in the Baltic Sea damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, which connect Russia to Germany, causing methane leakage.

Washington and Moscow blamed each other for trying to sabotage Russian-built gas pipelines. The clashes between the two countries continued during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, which had been convened by Russia to discuss the problems in the gas pipelines.
