Microplastics found in breast milk. What to do to avoid contamination

Scientists also leave some recommendations to avoid contamination, during lactation, by microplastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC. They also warn about cosmetics, toothpaste and synthetic clothing.

Scientists leave alert after analysis of breast milk from 34 women and a week after the birth of the baby. The study was carried out in Rome, Italy, and published in the journal Polymers, and detected the presence of polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC and other microplastics in two-thirds of the sample.

The presence of these substances in the human body has been increasingly evident and studied, as well as the foods with the greatest risk of impacting this contamination.

Substances that have been shown to have toxic effects on laboratory-studied species and marine fauna, having already been detected in human blood and placenta (2020) in previous studies. However, the human being will not escape this effect, with the aggravating factor that babies are at greater risk given their vulnerability.

These conclusions leave a very clear warning about food and an urgent request: more studies must be carried out as soon as possible, identifying specific risk factors.
