Merkel says it is possible to have anti-Covid vaccine before Christmas

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday that it is possible that vaccines against the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus may already be available before Christmas in her country

“It may happen that vaccines arrive before Christmas, and we have decided that they will be available to the medical and health teams first,” said the German leader speaking at the Bundestag, the country’s parliament. According to Merkel, the vaccine “represents the light at the end of the tunnel” of the Covid-19 pandemic, even though in the winter months (in the northern hemisphere) not everyone has yet been vaccinated and many are still without immunization.

As part of the European Union, Germany has access to six agreements signed with pharmaceutical companies that have the most advanced vaccines in tests in the world. Three of them – AstraZeneca / Oxford University, Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna – have already applied for data review at the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
