Pandemic still keeps 90% of planes on the ground

The world’s largest aviation groups are facing an unprecedented crisis and Portugal is no exception. Traffic at the main national airports is dropping more than 90%, although some companies have already started flying again. As of today, there are no limitations on passenger capacity. The use of a mask is mandatory.

In Portugal, the effects of the pandemic on civil aviation were visible to the naked eye: the skies remained blue, without the tracks of planes, and the birds returned to the vicinity of the airports. According to the Portuguese Air Navigation (NAV), in March flights over Portuguese skies decreased 36% – 24.3 thousand fewer flights, reaching 43.8 thousand. In April, the drop was 94%, corresponding to just four thousand of the 69 thousand registered in April 2019. In the penultimate week of May, there was already some recovery, with an average of 210 daily flights, 80 more than in the equivalent week Of april.
