Parliament approves law that makes education free May 22, 2020 Yesterday, Parliament unanimously approved the legislation amending the Basic Law of the Education and Teaching System, with 205 favorable votes.

The document contemplates free primary education and distance learning. The legal diploma passed through the sieve of the deputies with no votes against, nor abstentions, in the eighth ordinary plenary meeting of the National Assembly, chaired by the president, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos.

The gratuitousness in the Education and Teaching System, according to the law, means “exemption from any payment for enrollment, assistance to classes, school material and social support, for all students who attend primary education in public educational institutions” .

The State, observes the document, must create conditions so that students who attend primary education in public-private and private institutions “have access to school material, namely school manuals through free availability”. “The State must guarantee and promote the conditions necessary to make attendance at the initiation class and the first cycle of secondary education free of charge, as well as school health and school meals in public educational institutions”, reads in the diploma approved in globality.
