Chelsea has pulled off one of the biggest moves of the summer transfer window, securing Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers in a blockbuster deal worth €137 million. The 23-year-old England international flew directly back from the United States following the World Cup to complete his medical in London before signing a six-year contract with an option for an additional year.
The swift operation was orchestrated behind the scenes by Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, the club’s sporting directors, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali. Eghbali’s strong relationship with Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris proved decisive in accelerating negotiations shortly after England’s semi-final exit against Argentina.
Chelsea captain Reece James and star playmaker Cole Palmer—a close friend and former academy teammate of Rogers—were also actively involved in encouraging the move.

Although rival interest was anticipated, Arsenal ultimately stepped aside from entering a bidding war, allowing Chelsea to finalize terms unimpeded while the Gunners pivoted toward other attacking targets like Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola. The massive investment signals a subtle shift in strategy for Chelsea, blending their established policy of recruiting elite young talent with proven domestic production capable of instantly elevating Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Rogers will find plenty of familiar faces in the Stamford Bridge dressing room. Beyond his national team colleagues Reece James and Levi Colwill, he reunites with former Manchester City academy peers Cole Palmer, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Jamie Gittens. Tactically, his arrival gives Alonso versatile depth across the attacking line, offering the option to partner Rogers alongside Palmer or rotate the duo to maintain tactical flexibility throughout the campaign.
