Belgium qualified for the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup after a dominant 4-1 victory over co-hosts United States, who field forward Folarin Balogun following a highly controversial decision by FIFA to overturn his suspension.
Charles De Ketelaere led the Belgian attack with goals in the 9th and 33rd minutes, followed by second-half strikes from Hans Vanaken in the 57th minute and Romelu Lukaku deep into stoppage time (93rd minute). Malik Tillman scored the lone goal for the Americans in the 31st minute, converting a direct free kick won by Balogun.
Balogun’s inclusion in the lineup sparked widespread criticism, as the striker had received a red card during the round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following a highly unusual personal intervention from US President Donald Trump, FIFA wiped away the suspension in an unexplained ruling just hours before kickoff.

Despite his controversial reinstatement, Balogun could not prevent the Americans from being eliminated on home soil.
With the victory, Belgium advances to the quarterfinals, where they will face 2010 world champions Spain. The match is scheduled for Friday at 12:00 local time (20:00 in Lisbon) in Inglewood, California. Spain reached the quarterfinals after eliminating Portugal 1-0.
