Russia unleashed a massive, hours-long bombardment combining ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones against Ukraine’s capital overnight into Thursday, killing at least 17 people and wounding scores more. The intense aerial assault shattered residential neighborhoods and heavily damaged civilian infrastructure across all 10 districts of Kyiv.
The Associated Press reported that “Russia hammered Kyiv in a major drone and missile attack overnight into Thursday morning, killing at least 17 civilians and injuring scores more in what Moscow described as retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on oil facilities.” Air raid sirens echoed through the night as thousands of terrified residents rushed to seek safety inside underground metro stations following early warnings from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Emergency crews worked through the early morning hours to pull survivors from the wreckage of charred and structurally compromised buildings. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the deadly strikes wounded over 90 individuals.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, confirmed that emergency teams recorded severe damage across 30 separate locations in the city. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that at least 20 residential structures were compromised, including a nine-story apartment building in the Darnytskyi district where six full levels completely collapsed.

The scale of the devastation prompted an enormous emergency response, with the State Emergency Service deploying nearly 500 rescue personnel, 100 specialized vehicles, and a helicopter to manage spreading fires and handle rescue operations. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a paramedic was reported to be in extremely critical condition among the wounded, while a hotel and two five-story residential buildings suffered extensive damage.
The Russian Defense Ministry released a statement confirming the strikes, asserting that high-precision weapons targeted Ukrainian military industry facilities, fuel networks, and drone assembly plants.
According to Ukraine’s air force, the sheer volume of the attack included 74 missiles—24 of them highly difficult-to-intercept ballistic models—and 496 long-range drones. While air defense systems successfully neutralized a vast majority of the incoming threats, 25 ballistic missiles and 12 drones managed to break through and strike civilian zones.
In the wake of what he labeled a “night of horror,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha made an urgent public appeal to international allies, pleading for immediate shipments of advanced air defense systems and interceptor missiles. Sybiha strongly rejected Moscow’s attempts to frame the deadly bombardment as a justifiable act of retaliation, emphasizing that Ukraine is exercising its legal right to self-defense under the United Nations Charter while facing unprovoked aggression.
