The White House expects U.S. Vice President JD Vance to take part in upcoming talks between United States and Iran, scheduled for Friday in Islamabad, according to CNN.

Officials cited by the network said the meeting is expected to be led not only by Vance but also by Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump.

Witkoff and Kushner have been involved in several rounds of dialogue with Tehran over the past year, including a recent meeting on February 27 — just before the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran. This would mark the first time Vance is directly involved in such negotiations.

Currently on a visit to Hungary, Vance is expected to travel to Pakistan for the talks.

The development comes hours after Trump announced a bilateral ceasefire and delayed by two weeks a deadline he had set for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard had restricted traffic through the strait — a critical route for global oil and gas shipments — prompting Trump to threaten strikes on Iranian infrastructure if passage was not restored.

However, shortly before the deadline, the U.S. president postponed military action, citing mediation efforts by Pakistan and Iran’s commitment to ensure the “full, immediate and safe” reopening of the waterway.

Iranian authorities later confirmed they would guarantee safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz for the next two weeks and that talks with Washington would begin on April 10 in Islamabad.

Tehran has also presented a 10-point proposal to the U.S., which Trump described as a “workable basis” for a broader agreement. The plan reportedly includes halting U.S. and Israeli attacks, coordinating maritime traffic through the strait with Iranian forces, and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the region.
