Sporting CP coach Rui Borges says his team is determined to “turn the dream into reality” by reaching the Champions League semi-finals, ahead of their quarter-final first leg against Arsenal FC.

Speaking before the match in Estádio José Alvalade, Borges made clear the ambition goes beyond just competing: “We want to continue our path, but above all, to make history at a great club like Sporting. We believe we can do something different, something extraordinary.”

Despite the magnitude of the European clash, the 44-year-old coach stressed that his main priority remains domestic success, describing the league as “his Champions League.” He also downplayed the absence of captain Morten Hjulmand, expressing confidence in the squad’s depth.

Borges warned that facing Arsenal—despite their recent setbacks in domestic competitions—could be even more challenging. “They come wounded, but that makes them more focused and determined to prove their quality,” he said.

The coach also dismissed comparisons with last season’s heavy 5-1 defeat, insisting both teams have evolved. “The focus is on the present. Arsenal are stronger, but Sporting are different too. Any lack of concentration will cost us dearly.”

A major talking point ahead of the match is the return of Viktor Gyökeres to Alvalade. Borges acknowledged the striker’s quality and said stopping him will require a collective effort. “Great players always make a difference, no matter how well you know them.”

He expects Gyökeres to receive a warm welcome, praising his impact during his time at Sporting: “He made history here and deserves recognition.”

Borges also rejected any notion of favoritism, highlighting the strong campaigns of both sides. This view was echoed by teammate Maxi Araújo, who said the squad is “ready” and believes Sporting can reach the semi-finals for the first time.

Sporting host Arsenal this Tuesday in Lisbon, with kickoff scheduled for 20:00 and refereeing by Daniel Siebert.
