The death toll from recent heavy rains in Angola has risen to 42, with Luanda’s fatalities increasing from three to twelve, according to official sources.
Reports collected by Lusa indicate that at least 42 people have died due to torrential rains over the past weekend: 12 in Luanda, 24 in Benguela, four in Cuanza Sul, and two in Malanje, according to provincial government and civil protection authorities.
In Luanda, three people remain missing, prompting the Governor, Luís Nunes, to convene the Provincial Civil Protection Commission on Monday to assess the impact of the heavy rains.

Besides the fatalities, the rains caused significant damage, including destroyed homes, fallen trees, overflowed retention basins, landslides, and worsened ravines across the city’s 16 municipalities. Municipal administrations are conducting drainage operations, supporting affected families, clearing debris, pruning trees, and raising community awareness.
On Monday, President João Lourenço expressed deep concern over the widespread damage and stated that authorities are racing against time to locate and rescue missing individuals. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured full government support for affected communities.
